Are your gums healthy? Even seemingly minor change can be signs of periodontal (gum) disease. Make an appointment with your Andover, MA, dentists, Drs. Nicholas Papapetros, Jhon Giraldo, or Leo Kharin of Dentistry by Design, if you notice any of these gum disease signs and symptoms.
Have you ever noticed that your toothbrush looks pink or red after you brush? Although a little blood might not seem like a problem, bleeding after you brush or floss can be a sign of gingivitis, the mildest form of periodontal disease. If the disease is diagnosed at this stage, it can often be reversed with a dental cleaning and improved oral hygiene.
Chronic bad breath
It's impossible to avoid bad breath, but the problem is usually temporary. If brushing your teeth doesn't improve your breath, you may have periodontal disease. Bad breath can become an issue if you have gingivitis. Unfortunately, it will only worsen if you don't receive treatment from your Andover dentist.
Red, swollen, and tender gums are never a good sign and shouldn't be ignored. You may also notice that your gums have begun to recede.
Receding gums expose the sensitive roots of your teeth, triggering pain when you eat or drink hot or cold foods and beverages. Pain can last for as long as an hour after you've finished your meal or beverage. As gum disease worsens, you may experience pain when you chew, due to irritated, inflamed or infected gum tissue surrounding your teeth.
If you overlook early signs of gum disease and don't visit your dentist, deep spaces called pockets may form around your teeth. Bacteria in these pockets can damage the bones and ligaments that hold your teeth in place, causing loose teeth and tooth loss, in some cases. Severe periodontal disease can be treated with antibiotics, deep cleanings, gum surgery to close your pockets, and grafts to replace damaged bone and gum tissue.
Don't put your gums at risk. Contact your Andover, MA, dentists, Drs. Nicholas Papapetros, Jhon Giraldo, or Leo Kharin of Dentistry by Design, at (978) 475-5333 to schedule an appointment.
