While nobody likes to have a tooth pulled, there are times when an extraction is necessary for the sake of your oral health. If you have overcrowded teeth or teeth that have become loosened due to infection, severe damage, or decay, extractions may be the right procedure for you. Read on to learn if this treatment from Dentistry by Design in Andover, MA, is the right choice of your oral health.
What is the extraction process?
An extraction is the removal of your tooth by a dentist or oral surgeon. During the procedure, you will be given an injection of a local anesthetic to numb the area prior to having your tooth pulled. If the tooth is impacted, you may be given stronger anesthesia to put you to sleep while your dentist removes some tissue in order to loosen and extract the tooth.
Why might I need an extraction?
Your Andover dentist may remove one or more teeth due to overcrowding, particularly if you will be getting braces. Teeth that are severely damaged or decayed may need removal to prevent the spread of infection. If periodontal disease has caused your teeth to become loose, extraction may be needed.
What do I do after an extraction?
After an extraction, your mouth will likely be sore for a few days. In these cases, you will likely be prescribed a pain killer and instructed to apply a gauze pad to the treatment area throughout the healing process. You can also apply an ice pack to reduce swelling, and you should limit any strenuous activity for 24 hours.
To help prevent irritation or infection, you should stick to soft foods, avoid using a straw for liquids, and abstain from smoking. Additionally, while you should continue brushing and flossing your teeth, do so gently.
